It is important to note that it is necessary for a student to secure and certify funding in order to apply for the J-1 visa. Financing studies at the CDE can take some ingenuity and perseverance. The CDE expects candidates to fund their study through a combination of resources: government, corporate or grant agency support, and personal resources. It is important to begin the process of securing financial assistance well in advance.
There are a number of international scholarships for which you may be eligible. Look over the list provided below and apply for as many scholarships as possible. Please be aware that there is a substantial lead-time for some of these scholarships. It can take as long as 12-18 months for the application procedure. You should plan accordingly and start the application process well in advance of your intended studies at the CDE.
Scholarships are also available directly from Williams College. All admitted students are considered for such scholarships and no separate application is required. Note that priority for Williams College funding is given to those who have actively sought 3rd party funding as well.
Worldwide Scholarships
Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP)
In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Japanese Government, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP) for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. The scholarship covers tuition, medical insurance, allowance covering living expenses and books, and economy travel. Please visit the website for more information about eligibility and how to apply.
2021-2024 – CDE was selected as a “Participating Program” for Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarships over the next 3 years.
Applications for Fulbright awards are received by the Fulbright Commission in each country. In approximately 90 countries, the competition is conducted by the United States Information Service (USIS) post at the U.S. Embassy. In most countries there is very stiff competition for awards, and priorities may exist regarding disciplines, career level, type of activity, etc. The scholarship covers tuition, living allowance, medical insurance, etc. Deadlines vary from country to country but they are more than one year before enrollment at the CDE.
The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to develop effective scholars and leaders and to prepare them for employment, primarily within the AKDN. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, only in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).
Scholarships for Women
American Association of University Women (AAUW)
International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Awards are subject to change.
P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund
Grants are available to promote world peace and understanding for women who are citizens of any country other than the U.S. or Canada. These awards are for graduate students who are enrolled full-time. Money is not to be used for research or dissertation.
Regional Scholarships
Middle East
For over 40 years, AMIDEAST has arranged and administered student and employee exchange programs between the U.S. and the Middle East and North Africa. The funding programs include the Fulbright Program for the Middle East and North Africa.
